The Phantom Menace: A Tender Moment

Anakin and Padme get a little weepy.

EXT. THEED - STREET - NIGHT (FX)

SEVERAL FEDERATION DROIDS patrol a deserted city street. The
Palace can be seen in the distance.

INT. NABOO PALACE - THRONE ROOM - THEED - NIGHT

NUTE sits in a strange, mechanical walking chair, which
approaches SIO BIBBLE and SEVERAL OTHER NABOO OFFICIALS.
RUNE follows a few paces behind.

DROID GUARDS surround SIO BIBBLE and THE OTHERS as FOUR
COUNCIL MEMBERS watch.

NUTE
When are you going to give up this
pointless strike? Your Queen is lost,
your people are starving, and you,
Governor, are going to die, much
sooner than your people, I'm afraid.
Take him away!

BIBBLE
This invasion will gain you nothing.
We're a democracy. The people have
decided... They will not live under
your tyranny.

BIBBLE is taken away as OOM-9 approaches NUTE.

OOM-9
My troops are in position to begin
searching the swamps for these rumored
underwater villages... they will not
stay hidden for long.

INT. NABOO SPACECRAFT - MAIN AREA

The ship is asleep. The lights are dim as PADME walks into
the main room.

She goes to a monitor and watches the BIBBLE plea recording.
JAR JAR is stretched out on the floor, snoring. ARTOO is to
one side, cooing as he rests.

PADME appears tired. She senses someone watching her and
turns around with a start. She sees ANAKIN sitting in the
corner, shivering and looking verydejected. She goes over to
him. He looks up at her with tears in his eyes. He is holding
his arms to keep himself warm.

PADME
Are you all right?

ANAKIN
It's very cold.

PADME gives him her over-jacket.

PADME
You're from a warm planet, Annie.
Too warm for my taste. Space is cold.

ANAKIN
You seem sad.

PADME
The Queen is...worried. Her people
are suffering...dying. She must
convince the Senate to intervene,
or...I'm not sure what will happen.

ANAKIN
I'm...I'm not sure what's going to
happen to me. I dunno if I'll ever
see you again..
(he pulls something
from his pocket)
I made this for you. Sou you'd
remember me. I carved it out of a
japor snippet... It will bring you
good fortune.

ANAKIN hands a wooden pendant to PADME. She inspects it,
then puts it around her neck.

PADME
It's beautiful, but I don't need
this to remember you. Many things
will change when we reach the capital,
Annie. My caring for you will always
remain.

ANAKIN
I care for you too. Only I...miss...

ANAKIN is disturbed about something. Tears are in his eyes.

PADME
...You miss your mother.

ANAKIN looks at her, unable to speak. She hugs him.

  1. Wow. I had forgotten just how wimpy Anakin is (or "Annie". It's a good thing that Padme is there with a jacket.

  2. Lulz! No shit. Our teenage Anakin is not this much of a douche.

Also, we need to avoid the mothering vibe. If these two are going to be teen lovers soon, I don't need the mothering scene to stick with us. This needs heavy editing.

  3. Not sure how you can find anything wrong with this touching scene. Other than wanting even more touching.

  4. Okay, the first bit of this is fine. The part on Naboo. I like the menace of the statement about the Gungan underwater villages.

One question that again pops up, though, it just what the heck is the political system in place on Naboo?

    1. They have a queen.
    2. Apparently this "queen" is elected.
    3. Queens seem to turn into senators.
    4. It appears that Palpatine is a senator representing Naboo--does that mean he was once queen? Okay, king?
    5. There's also a governor, now.
    6. The governor claims it's a democracy.
    7. The governor claims the people have "decided not to live under this tyranny." Did the people take a post-invasion vote? Have they revolted? Have they written letters to the editor?

  5. Alright, second part. The moment on the Millenium Falc--er, random Naboo starship.

We juice this up by bringing in our Gungan Rogue to put the moves on Padme while she's feeling vulnerable. Personally I don't think she follows through, but she is tempted, and mayhaps the tryst is blocked but the serendipitous arrival of Anakin on the scene.

Or maybe they go through with it. Then somehow Anakin finds them in the afterglow. Might be hard to write that part...but maybe not if there have been some sparks flying between Anakin and Padme on Tatooine.

This could set up very similarly to the Leia-Luke-Han triangle in Star Wars, which really lasts right up until Han seizes control halfway through Empire.

It's tantalizing, the chain of events that would then lead the galaxy to the ascension of Darth Vader: 1. with invisible hand's suggestion, the only reason Anakin gets picked up by the Jedi is because Padme fails to follow Qui-Gon's advice on where to land the ship. 2. If only Padme had leaned Gungan Rogue's way instead of Anakin's, then Anakin's big heartbreak and Palpatine's manipulation thereof would be prevented.

  6. by the way, I've now hopelessly confused myself with all these changes we may or may not have made to the script.

    somebody do an outline.

  7. A further comment on what I now affectionately call "The Flip" (invisible hand's suggestion that the only reason Anakin gets picked up by the Jedi is because Padme fails to follow Qui-Gon's advice on where to land the ship).

We can insert a couple of lines at the end of the movie, as Anakin is accepted into Jedi school and the whole Naboo crisis has been averted because Anakin goes all Ender Wiggin + Last Starfighter in the big battles:

Obi-Wan: I guess it was a good thing after all that Amidala went against your advice and landed on Tatooine.

    Qui-Gon: Mm?

Obi-Wan: Otherwise, we would not have found young Anakin.

Qui-Gon (shakes his head as if bothered by something, but with resolution his face clears): Yes. I was clearly wrong that time. A valuable lesson that even a Jedi Master is not infallible, my friend.

  8. I should put this back on the "arriving at Tatooine" thread, but imagine this:

During The Flip, Qui-Gon actually argues for landing on Dantooine. I think it's reasonable that Dantooine is close to Tatooine. Qui-Gon says something like "we have friends there."

This sets up for Leia later suggesting that there's a Rebel base on Dantooine--and the Empire discovering evidence of there having been Rebels there in the past.

  9. I hereby refuse to write up the outline. We should hire someone to do that. I can pay in leftover gluttony wings and monkey bread.

I like the flip in principle. I don't think we should overdo it, but this may not be too much yet.

I'm not sure the SW audience is ready for interspecies sex, even if it's hinted instead of shown.
