Who should REALLY be in the Rock and Roll HOF?

There are way too many people in the rock and roll hall of fame.  It's time to cull the herd.

These artists should actually be there:

Elvis Presley
Buddy Holly
The Beach Boys
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
The Who
Diana Ross & the Supremes
Smokey Robinson
Led Zeppelin
Jimi Hendrix
The Grateful Dead
The Doors
The Bee Gees
Pink Floyd
The Police
U2
REM
Michael Jackson
Eric Clapton
The Clash
Elton John
Eagles

I may be done.

  1. My big problem has always been the use of the phrase "rock and roll" here. Who counts as such and who doesn't? I think they're FAR too liberal with it.

That said, I like your list. I personally could happily cut the Doors. And I suspect that SOMEBODY more recent than REM/U2/MJ has to be on there.

Does Madonna qualify? I vote no based on R&R, but if MJ is in...?

  2. Madonna prolly qualifies.

And Bruce Springsteen, I think I left him off.

  3. I'd put ABBA in. Completely dominated record sales in the late '70s.

  4. David Bowie? Hmm, probably. Did well in a number of eras.

I think I'll put in the Holland/Dozier/Holland songwriting team for Motown, but leave out most of the Motown big name performers. Once Holland/Dozier/Holland left, it was pretty clear how much Motown depended on them.

  5. Note that, I believe, you have to have charted a minimum of 25 years ago to be eligible for induction. That rules out your Pearl Jams and Nirvanas.

None of the hair bands has stood the test of time, nor has the keyboard-infested first half of the '80s.

I love bands like Queen and Dire Straits but I don't think they were big enough for induction. John Mellencamp has had a very long career, as has Tom Petty, but in the end I don't think did squat except what everybody else was doing anyway. I don't think that's worthy of the Hall of Fame.

Oops, did I leave out Dylan? Obviously he's in, whether you like him or not.

  6. Woot, Abba!

I'd put Queen in, but I hear what you're saying.

I'm glad we don't have to argue about Pearl Jams and Nirvanas yet.

  7. Also, to be clear, I'm leaving out people who "merely" influenced rock and roll. People like Hank Williams, or Robert Johnson, or Glenn Miller. Hell, I think Patsy Cline is the the real Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and I can't figure that out.

    And I love Patsy Cline.
